Top 7 Tuesday: Chases [Matt]

Matt —  November 15, 2011 — Leave a comment

Chases have been a staple of films since before sound.  Not just the centerpieces of action films, they tend to add a bit of excitement and occasional laughs to all sorts.  I love a good chase, and what follows are a few of my favorites.

I am going to come right out and say it, I like remakes. Or I should say, I like the idea of a remake. Yes remakes get  a bad rap, and that is not entirely undeserved. There are a lot of really poor remakes that are clearly nothing more than cashing in on a popular genre, without the burden of creating an original idea. Then there is the other kind of remake, the one that is made by talented people who are clearly fans of the original, or maybe the story, and want to represent or honor what they love in their own way. Its frustrating to hear people jump all over a remake and accusing it of “destroying the original” that statement alone is absolutely ridiculous. So as a fan of (quality) remakes, allow me to share with you a few of my favorites.

Man, fanboys just love to moan about remakes.  “I can’t believe they’re doing (blank)!?!”  “How dare they touch (blank)!?!?”  But remakes are as old as Hollywood itself.  The Wizard of Oz is a remake.  There’s been a billion different takes on Bram Stoker’s Dracula.  Alfred Hitchcock even remade himself with his second The Man Who Knew Too Much and it’s easily superior to the original.  And John Carpenter’s The Thing is a remake and should totally be on my list below, but with Halloween so close behind me I’m just sick and tired of singing that film’s praises.  Besides, Matt did such a good job already.  So forgive me when I don’t get too hot and bothered when some trade announces another Evil Dead or…gasp! Star Wars (it’s gonna happen sooner or later).

A lot of people poo-poo remakes (and sequels), decrying Hollywood for being ‘out of ideas’ or what have you.  But, you know what?  Remakes can be great.  Oh, sure, you get the occasional Rollerball or Planet of the Apes.  But you also get the occasional Fright Night or The Fly.  And let’s not forget that several well respected films are actually remakes, like the Humphrey Bogart version of The Maltese Falcon (third adaptation of the novel).  What follows are a few of my favorites. It is most definitely that time of year again.  Yes, the time where all the ghouls, goblins, kids, crazies and women dressed in scantily-clad outfits come out and play.  Since I’ve always been too lazy to be one of those “scantily-cladded” ladies,  I tend to stay inside and indulge in my film fetishes.  Let the fetishes unravel…

Putting together an essential playlist for Halloween has probably been one of my toughest challenges for cineAWESOME! yet.  The Horror genre is filled with an endless combination of possibilities and I’ve been bashing my brain for the last two days finding the right collection of flicks that best represents my idea of ultimate Halloween boobtubing.  After you’ve gorged yourself on pillow sacks of candy and sweated off your overly complicated cardboard robot costume, these are the movies to destroy the remaining hours of the day and the first hours of the next.

Halloween is on of those holidays I’ve always enjoyed.  It’s a touch macabre, but also a lot of fun.  We face our inevitable end, poke it in the face, and laugh it off.  A cathartic time.  I think it’s a little slice of this relief that we get when we watch horror films, and watching them around this time of year holds a little extra magic.  There are so many great ones.  But, some just feel right this time of year.  What follows are a few I have either already popped in the dvd player, or plan to in the next week. Halloween weekend is almost upon us, and that means horror movie marathons on my part. Apparently most of the writers here feel the same way (which goes to show how well we all get together at least virtually) so we decided to do our Top 7 Tuesday around what we watch on Halloween. Creating a Halloween Playlist so to speak. So follow me my ghouls and gals fire up the VHS, DVD, and Blu-ray players and pop some popcorn. Curtains up. It’s Halloween time. Continue Reading…

Halloween has always been my favorite time of the year especially for films and TV. I’m a horror movie fan and its the genre that brought me to this never ending dance of cinema. This playlist could very well extend to 100 films, but if I have to choose 7 that are absolute must-see for me during the Halloween season here’s what makes the final cut. Continue Reading…
